The Doge(s) of Venice

Venice's last doge was Ludovico Manin, who abdicated in 1797 when Venice passed under the power of Napoleon's France following his conquest of the city.

Similarly the last Doge of Genoa, Giacomo Brignole, was forced to abdicate in 1797 after Napoleon invaded the Republic (apparently to avoid a British landing).
